How to prepare for a safe and effective hair transplant procedure.

The success of hair transplantation is not solely dependent on the "day of the procedure." Lasting results and strong graft attachment begin with the "pre-preparation" phase. Hairscension has therefore compiled guidelines for proper pre-transplant preparation to ensure a safe procedure and deliver the best possible results to every patient.

1. Preparation time.

Generally, patients should begin preparing their bodies at least 7–14 days before hair transplantation. However, in some cases, preparation may be longer, such as for those with weak existing hair or weak hair follicles in the donor site (back of the head). The doctor may recommend nourishing and rejuvenating the hair follicles 3–6 months in advance to maximize the survival rate of the hair grafts.

Important to know : There is no one-size-fits-all approach to hair transplant preparation. Individuals with underlying medical conditions, those taking ongoing medication, or those who have previously undergone hair loss treatment will require a personalized preparation plan.

At Hairscension, we don't just assess the condition of your hair; we evaluate your overall health, lifestyle, and healing factors to design a safe and personalized preparation program for you.

2. Important information to provide to your doctor.

Your health risk information is crucial in procedure planning. The more accurate and complete information the doctor receives, the higher the safety level will be throughout the process. Please prepare the following information to provide to your doctor during the assessment.

  1. All types of underlying medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, high blood pressure, heart disease).

  2. Medications, vitamins, and supplements that you use regularly.

  3. History of drug allergies , especially to anesthetics, pain relievers, or antibiotics.

  4. History of hair transplantation or past hair loss treatments.

3. Things to "avoid" before hair transplantation.

Even small daily habits directly affect blood flow, wound healing, and hair follicle attachment. Therefore, the following should be strictly avoided.

  1. Refrain from using cigarettes and e-cigarettes for at least 14 days before the procedure, as nicotine constricts blood vessels, reducing blood flow to hair grafts and slowing wound healing.

  2. Avoid alcoholic beverages for at least two days prior to the procedure. Alcohol causes blood vessels to dilate, increases blood pressure, and slows blood clotting, which can lead to excessive bleeding during surgery and increased swelling afterward.

  3. Certain vitamins, medications, and herbs, such as blood thinners, ginkgo biloba extract, vitamin E, vitamin K, fish oil, and various other herbs, affect blood clotting.

Important precaution: Never stop taking your regular medication on your own, especially medications for chronic diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Always seek advice and a medication adjustment plan from your doctor first.

4. Things to do before hair transplant day.

In addition to avoiding risky situations, small preparations in daily life can greatly help make the procedure day go more smoothly.

  1. Get enough rest. Get at least 7-8 hours of sleep the night before the event.

  2. Dress code: Wear a short-sleeved shirt or a shirt with front buttons that can be easily removed and put on without irritating or chafing the head.

  3. Cleanse your hair with a special antibacterial shampoo provided by the clinic to reduce bacteria on the scalp and prevent infection.

  4. Plan your return journey. Driving yourself home after the procedure is not recommended due to potential fatigue or medication side effects. It is advisable to have someone pick you up or use public transportation.

5. Symptoms in the initial period after hair transplantation.

The first 1-14 days after hair transplantation are crucial. The following are normal bodily reactions that can occur.

  • Swelling usually begins to appear and is most severe on the 4th day after the procedure, before gradually subsiding.

  • Itching can occur both in the area where hair was transplanted and in the wound area on the back of the head during the healing process.

  • For minor stiffness or soreness, the clinic will provide pain relievers and anti-inflammatory medication to be taken as needed.

  • Hiccups are a temporary side effect that occurs in some individuals on the 2nd-3rd day after hair transplantation.

  • Dry wounds and cracks: During the second week, scabs will begin to fall off. Seeing cracks on the scalp is normal during the skin healing process.

Instructions: During this time, be careful to avoid hitting your head on anything, and keep a record of any symptoms you observe to discuss and assess with your doctor at your follow-up appointment.
